In Y5F we have been listening to and making Cuban music with a visitor named Eral. We learned some new rhythms and beats, which were easy to remember if you sung the words that go with the beats. One of the sets of words that we sung went: Tin-go-go-go-go-go-go. Hopefully, we’ll get to record them soon and you can listen too!

This year Y5 (Miss Fs class) are doing a performance of Cuban music in Sheffield. Cuban music is jolly and friendly it has lots of drumming in it. We are making instruments but we are not going to decorate them because when we play them the decoration will probably fall off!
Eral, who has been to Cuba, has been into school to show us how to play and make our instruments. We have also been searching for information about Cuban music; there are lots of instruments with wierd names like ’Shakira’! We have a song that we play. It’s called Tin-Go-Go-Go-Go-Go-Go and it keeps repeating itself.

Over the past few weeks five very lucky people have had the chance to work with the author Daniel Blythe they were also given the chance to go on a school trip to Kelham Island. Every Friday morning Thomas W, Kate I, Zakk W, Summer W and Liam D worked with Daniel doing various activities. Some of these activities were; creating our own imaginary characters and writing our own stories based on simple objects such as a bouncy balls, torches, hammers and wallets. These very lucky children thoroughly enjoyed working with the author and are also very excited about going to the museum at Kelham Island and working with other authors.

On Friday 20th we had a theatre company called M&M, who performed the Wizard of Oz. The funniest part was when the munkchin kept on saying buy to the good witch. Softly, Dorothy started to sing ‘Somewhere over the rainbow’. She then put the puppet dog into the Year 3’s faces; it was like a fluffy cloud with black spots on it. The scarecrow was always running and doing flips, when Dorothy found him. It was amazing!!

On 20th April 2007 a theatre company came to SJS for the afternoon to perform the Wizard of Oz to the whole school. It was great all the way through but my favourite part was when the witch actually made a spark come out of her hand!

On the 21st of May Stocksbridge Junior School will be holding their annual heathly week. There will be sports coaches coming in to teach us fun sports such as: tennis, basketball, skipping and much much more. There will hopefully be a karate display too. They are amazing; Healthy Week wouldn’t be the same without them!
I’m really looking forward to it!!
During our Healthy Week when we were in Year 3 , one class did an experiment to see what sugar does to our teeth.

This shows that to many fizzy drinks can damage your teeth.

Last Tuesday (the 10th April 2007 to be precise) a theatre company called M&N productions came into school to perform the Wizard of Oz. It was an amazing performance. I really enjoyed it. The performance was just like the film and the scenery was brilliantly painted! The scarecrow did lots of acrobatics.

On Tuesday 24th April Mr Wilson’s literacy set were taught how to create podcasts by Miss W and Andy. We worked in pairs, which made it even more fun, to practice and record our reports on a carnival. We had written a first draft down the day before so we just had a little practice then used a program called Podium to record them. It was really exciting and I sounded really funny when I listened to myself!

On the 24th of April the year 5 top literacy set made podcasts. The day before we all wrote about a carnival in the genre of a newspaper report so that we could record these as podcasts. We had to speak into a microphone which recorded our voies. Then we got to listen to it and see the sound waves. The podcasts were realy fun to make as everyone felt like real reporters! Some of us got jingles on the front of our reports, this made it sound really dramatic, like we were breaking news. On some of the reports we said about rides going at 25 miles an hour!
COOL!!!

On Friday the 20th of April 2007 the whole school went into the hall to watch the Wizard of Oz preformed by the M and M theatre company. It was so cool. My favorite chariter was the scarcrow (he was very good t gymnastics). The sets were so cool. It was loud because they were wearing microphones. My favorite part was when they went into the enchanted forest. Because the trees had food on them.

On Friday a theatre group came in to school to act the wizard of oz for us. The sets and costumes were brilliant as were the 5 actors/actresses who not onle played the 15 parts but also changed the scenes and controlled the sound effects. It was very well organised and also had microphones so we could hear them clearly.
We bumped in to tin man, lion and scarecrow and now we’re off to see the wizard….

On Friday 20th April 2007, M & M Theatrical Productions showed ‘The Wizard of Oz’ to the whole school. We all filed in class by class (which was a bit of a squeeze) and waited until the lights went low. The start of the story was set in Cansas, where Dorothy, Toto and Uncle Henry lived. Dorothy wanted to go somewhere over the rainbow, so she warbled a song out! When she opened the door to Oz she was gobsmacked! The she was given a chilling threat from the witch of the west, who was the witch of the east’s sister until Dorothy’s house landed on her! On the way to the Emerald City, Dorothy met: Scarecrow with no brain, Tin Man with no heart and Lion, who had no courage. Each time they met someone new the sang a cringeworthy song that was sooooo embarassing! But as the production got nearer the end it became much more exciting! I enjoyed watching Wizard of Oz, but I would be glad never to her that cringeworthy song ever again! The same line had got into my head all throughtout the rest of the day! We’re off to see the wizard the wonderful wizard of OZ!

On Friday 20th April 2007, M&M theatrical productions came to S.J.S to preform the Wizard of Oz. It was a very enjoyable and exciting performance, as the whole school loved it! As we sat down we watched the story evolve as Dorothy, her dog Toto, lion, scarecrow and tin-man follow the yellow brick road to Emerald City and have their wishes granted. This was very fun as the whole of S.J.S joined in with most of the songs and were all included. So on the whole everyone enjoyed it and very much appreciated this performance.

Recently, Steven, a futsal coach, came in to teach us how to play the competitive sport - futsal. Futsal is a game with 5 players either side and you are only allowed 4 seconds to put the ball back into play and take goal-kicks. This makes it a very fast moving game. The ball is very heavy so it does not bounce and it can not be lifted over a certain height. The sport is played in Brazil from a young age, hence their nifty tricks on the international pitch. Futsal is a thorourally enjoyable sport.
