Some of the Y4s went to an athletics competition at the High School in Stocksbrige. We had do all different events like hurdles, long jump, speed bounce, chest push and many more. The athletics was for boys and girls in y3 and y4. We tried our very best. We went with our very supporting teachers Miss Keating and Miss Sheehan. It was very tense waiting for the results. They read out that in fourth place was Wharncliffe Side and in third place was St Anne’s. That left us and Deepcar for first and second. When they said that Deepcar came second we couldn’t belive that we’d won! There had never been a y3 and y4 athletics competition before so hopefully the Y3s and 4s will follow our winning next year. Our two teachers have been helping us out by training and prapairing for the competion.

On the 10th of March 2008, Stocksbridge Junior School’s amazing Athletics Squad went to the South Yorkshire finals to compete for the title of the best team in South Yorkshire. The athletes went to the EIS (English Institute of sport) to hopefully win the most races as possible to get the most points and therefore earn the title of South Yorkshire winners! At the end of the competition, everyone who took part, sat nervously as the result were counted. Amazingly, after about 6 years of SJS squads competing, WE WON!!!

S.J.S made a stunning performance yesterday at the English Institute of Sports in the South Yorkshire Indoor Athletics final. Our school has been amazing at each of the rounds so faras everyone has tried their absolute hardest to do their bit as a part of the team. The work paid off; we won!!!!!!! Everyone was nervous as the commentator revealed the places from 7th to 1st place. We couldn’t believe it when it was only the two Sheffield schools left for 1st and 2nd places, even moreso when he read us out for 1st place! Well, everyone in our school now says, “We’re the best team in South Yorkshire!” All the athletics teams are surely going to cherish the memories forever.

In school council we are thinking of having a sponsored event to see how many bounces you can do in three minutes and people can put money on peopole that they think will do the most bounces. We are also thinking about having an assembly which they anounce the star of the week, house points and we were thinking about cloakroom awards again. We might have handwriting awards too. We don’t know if we will have lunchtime awards and break time awards.

On Thursday, 8 children who had the most PFWAs went to Stocksbridge sport hall to play lacrosse. The team lost the 1st and 2nd games, however, we won the 3rd and 4th. At the end of the day we came 2nd, only 2 points behind the winners! Contgratulations to Deepcar who won fair and square and now go through to the next round.

On Thursday 31st January 2008 the Links Final of the Sheffield Indoor Athletics was held at the English Institute of Sport. There were 7 schools altogether which included Phillimore, St John’s, norfolk, Sharrow & Deepcar. At first everybody was very nervous and giddy but soon calmed down and got down to business when Mrs G gave us our teamtalk. The boys went first on the track whilst the girls did there field events brilliantly. The boys even won all but one of their racess! At half time all the girls were nervous because so many people would be watching them run. just like the boys, the girls managed to win most of their races! After all of the races the organiser got us all together to read out the results - when he got to third place he still hadn’t read us out. The top two places go through to the next round so when he read that Norfolk were third, we all whooped with joy. Amazingly, with 180 points, we came first! We recieved a trophy to keep, and a shield to keep for the year plus a minature trophy!
The City Final is on Friday 29th February so fingers crossed!!!

Yesterday we went to a gymnastics competition at All Saints Collage in Sheffield. We were all really excited as we’ve been really busy training with Miss Freeman recently. Even though all of the other schools had been coached by professional gymnastics coaches, Team A came first out of all the schools; taking home a trophy for the school and a gold medal each. (Shelby and Ellie from Deepcar tried to make a comment on our blog to tell us how easily they were going to beat us … How wrong they were!!!) Everybody else got certificates for taking part and the second and third place teams got silver and bronze medals. Two gymnasts from our school were picked for scoring the highest in individual events and were awarded another medal! Our squad wore purple leotards and T-shirts that have been personalised with our names on. We all had a FAB time at this competiton!!!

P.S. I hope we go again!!!

A carefully selected squad of Y5 and Y6 children took part in the first round (Links Cluster) Sheffield Schools Athletics Competition on Tuesday 15th January 2008. It took place at Stocksbridge High School, where we competed against two other schools; sadly, Oughtibridge were unable to make it. We each did field events (things like long jump, the speed bounce and the seated throw) and also competed in a variety of track races. To get through to the next round we had to pick up as many point as possible so we had to to win lots of races - in fact, we won them all! When they announced the final scores we had 81 points; 30 points ahead of second place! We all cheered and some of us cried… happy tears of course!

Yet again SJS is holding the annual Easter egg competition. You have to think of a theme, boil an egg and design a scene with your egg in it, the best one will win an easter egg. Some children have done things like egg band, eggcelent holiday and even one named after places and holidays e.g. eggaria (Bulgaria). There will be three winners and they will get one egg each, if they did it with more than 1 person then they have to split the egg between them. There has been many enteries and many different ides but they are magnificent and a vast improvement from last year.

On Friday 16th March nearly everyone (including me) did a particular act of their choice for the Stocksbridge Junior School’s limited addition of stars in their eyes for comic relief!!! The day before Miss Freeman (the organiser) held auditions for all of the people who wanted to participate in the wonderful event!everyone was either wearing fancy dress or a costume-they all looked extremely funny (especially when they did their act).

On Sunday 11th March 2007, six children from Stocksbridge Junior School competed in the Sheffield Schools Trampolining competition at All Saints School, Sheffield. Far more people were there than we ever expected, which made the experience rather daunting. Team A was made up of three Year 6 girls and Team B consisted of three girls from Year 4. This was the first competion for all six competitors so we thought we’d just have a go and try our best. Our first routines went without a hitch… or at least we thought they were good. Miss F recorded them with her digital camera then we watched them back and Miss W pointed out our flyaway arms and messy feet so we could improve for final routine.
We waited for the presentation whilst everybody else completed their routines. Amazingly the Year 6 team finished 3rd out of 15 schools with one of our competitors finishing in 2nd place out of over 55 trampolinists!

The school council recently organised the 2p trail! Each class had two weeks to collect as many 2 pence coins as possible, then on Friday lunchtime each class lined their coins up back and forth in the hall to see which class had collected the most. Well done to Mrs G’s class who won an extra playtime.
