Imagine you were walking home from school. You saw a car driver swerve suddenly to avoid a fox. The car went into a tree but the driver was not hurt and neither was the fox.You were the only person who saw the accident, so you have been asked to write a detailed account of what happened.

On Thursday 17th January 2008 Stocksbridge Junior School Gymnastics team went to All Saints College to compete in tournament. We went in two teams of five with a reserve and a mascot. We each performed a floor routine and a vault sequence. We did so well that both teams received awards and altogether we managed to get through to the next round. We wouldn’t have been able to do it without Miss Freeman our coach so thank you very much from all of the squad!

This year SJS writing week has been based on the book ‘Blodin the Beast’ by Micheal Morpurgo. Miss Sheehan’s literacy set created some other wierd and powerful monsters to base our stories on. Here are some examples:
Moonlet Army
Icicle The Dragon
Bigfoot

Every Thursday, Y5F go swimming at the Leisure Centre. It’s a bit of a rush to get there and it’s even more of a rush to get back especially as it’s up hill and we’re tired from all the swimming but it’s still great fun. There were three different groups: one for beginners, another for fairly good swimmers then top group for good swimmers. Most people are in the middle group. We can’t wait until next week!

Yesterday we went to a gymnastics competition at All Saints Collage in Sheffield. We were all really excited as we’ve been really busy training with Miss Freeman recently. Even though all of the other schools had been coached by professional gymnastics coaches, Team A came first out of all the schools; taking home a trophy for the school and a gold medal each. (Shelby and Ellie from Deepcar tried to make a comment on our blog to tell us how easily they were going to beat us … How wrong they were!!!) Everybody else got certificates for taking part and the second and third place teams got silver and bronze medals. Two gymnasts from our school were picked for scoring the highest in individual events and were awarded another medal! Our squad wore purple leotards and T-shirts that have been personalised with our names on. We all had a FAB time at this competiton!!!

P.S. I hope we go again!!!

From 14th January to 18th January it has been Writing Week at SJS. The theme of writing week has been Blodin the beast by Michel Morporgo. We have done a broadcast about the book, a postcard to Shanga who is a character and in other year groups children have made an ending to the book before reading the real ending.

A carefully selected squad of Y5 and Y6 children took part in the first round (Links Cluster) Sheffield Schools Athletics Competition on Tuesday 15th January 2008. It took place at Stocksbridge High School, where we competed against two other schools; sadly, Oughtibridge were unable to make it. We each did field events (things like long jump, the speed bounce and the seated throw) and also competed in a variety of track races. To get through to the next round we had to pick up as many point as possible so we had to to win lots of races - in fact, we won them all! When they announced the final scores we had 81 points; 30 points ahead of second place! We all cheered and some of us cried… happy tears of course!

During writing week in Year 4 we have been writing our own stories based on a picture book called Blodin the Beast. We had to pick a name for our characters then pick what Hosea (the little boy) took with him on his journey through the mountains, the jungle and the desert. We also had to figure out what equipment to use to destroy the monster. We had early literacy lessons and extra literacy lessons all to try and finish our story of Blodin the beast. Thankfully Miss S was on hand to help us improve our sentences.

In writing Week we wrote a story based on a book called Blodin the beast. We even made our own MONSTER and mine was ‘Icecall the Dragon’ then we wrote our own story. It was really good fun in Miss Sheehan’s literacy group. You can try it too!
